Can Hair Loss Caused by Chemotherapy be Avoided?

Hair Loss Caused by Chemotherapy

A cancer diagnosis is harrowing. It has long been one of the most dreaded diseases known to man, and even in the modern world, it can be challenging to accept. Fortunately, there are treatments for the disease, and if caught early, it can be pretty straightforward. Unfortunately, chemotherapy, the most common treatment for cancer, has many drawbacks. Chief among these drawbacks is hair loss.

Chemotherapy can cause thinning of the hair, and will eventually cause the hair to fall out completely. Once you finish chemo and your body has had time to reject its toxins, your hair will grow back after a few weeks. Although the initial growth may look different than your former hair, it will gradually transition back to the type of hair that you once had.

However, that doesn’t change the fact that hair loss during chemotherapy can be a very stressful process that can impact self-esteem. Because of this, many going through the treatment want to fight the loss of their hair. Although there is no proven, foolproof way to stop or slow hair loss from chemotherapy, there are a few treatments that have been shown to work in certain situations.

One of these solutions is a scalp cooling cap, a cap filled with cold fluid that you put on your head during chemo infusions. The logic behind this treatment is that the cold cap slows blood flow to your scalp, keeping away the flow of chemo drugs to the area.

Another potential solution is using creams such as Rogaine. These treatments were developed for people facing genetic hair loss, but they work in the same way for those dealing with the chemical loss of hair. Although it won’t help you when losing your hair, it accelerates the hair regrowth process after chemotherapy ends.

There are ways to fight chemotherapy-related hair loss; however, it’s something that often has to be managed, rather than prevented. For those facing long-term chemotherapy, a more permanent option may be necessary in order to deal with hair loss.

Hairline Ink has experts skilled in scalp micropigmentation, a complicated pigmentation procedure that mimics the look of a freshly shaved head. This treatment is permanent and can help someone who has lost all of their hair or needs their thinning hair to look fuller. We are standing by to answer any questions you might have and teach you more about this process.
