Healthcare professionals have dedicated entire careers searching for patterns to better understand how baldness develops, but what about the relationship between a person’s hair loss and their height? Dr. Stefanie Heilmann-Heimbach at the University of Bonn analyzed genetic data from 11,000 men who were experiencing premature hair loss and compared it to 12,000 men who still had full heads of hair. The study used participants from seven different countries, and they were all randomly selected to ensure unbiased data. However, the results are surprising.
Research has proven that growing your hair out does not affect your chances of growing taller, but the reverse statement may not be true. The results from this latest study suggest that there is actually a strong correlation between a person’s height and their likeliness to go bald at an early age. The German-based team of scientists also concluded that hair loss can be linked to lighter skin color and increased bone density, suggesting a stronger innate ability to generate vitamin D from sunlight exposure.
According to Dr. Stefanie Heilmann-Heimbach, her team was able to process the large amount of data and “identify 63 alterations in the human genome that increase the risk of premature hair loss.” Her study found other characteristics associated with hair loss, such as reaching puberty at a younger age and being more susceptible to certain illnesses. For instance, men who experience premature hair loss may have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer later on in life. This study also revealed a connection between reduced body size and early hair loss, but it was not able to conclude with certainty that there was a link between hair loss and a greater chance of heart disease. The team of researchers reassured men with premature hair loss that the risk of illness was only slightly increased, and indicated that more research is needed to be certain.
For men who experience premature hair loss, a cure may be on the horizon. This study is being hailed by medical experts as an important step towards understanding the underlying causes of hair loss. In a few more decades, they believe we may be able to finally cure male pattern baldness.
