Do Hair Transplants Actually Work?

Hair loss is so common in both men and women around the world that hair transplants are an equally common procedure. During a hair transplant, a doctor will take hair from an area on your scalp or body with lots of thick hair and replant it to the part of your scalp that is thinning or balding. But the question is: Do they work?

The Facts

According to an article from Healthline, about 60% of men worldwide experience some degree of hair loss. This is compared to 50% of women who experience some thinning or balding. Some people choose hair transplants as a way to combat this problem. Whether the transplant works as desired depends on each individual. As with regular hair, the transplanted hair will likely thin as you age. Experts generally agree that hair transplants are best for patients who experience hair thinning or balding naturally, as opposed to losing hair as a side effect of chemotherapy or other strong medications.

Additionally, experts do not recommend hair transplants for people who experience widespread thinning or baldness. This phenomenon likely cannot be treated by transplants, since the transplanted hair must come from somewhere on your body.

The Procedure

Should you choose to undergo a hair transplant, your doctor will perform one of two procedures: follicular unit transplantation (FUT) or follicular unit extraction (FUE).

During the FUT procedure, your doctor will remove a 6-10 inch strip of skin from the back of your scalp, then separate it into smaller pieces. These smaller pieces are known as grafts. Then, your doctor will use a needle to insert hairs from the grafts into small punctures he has made on your scalp.

Should you choose FUE, it is a similar procedure to FUT, except the doctor will not remove a strip of skin from your scalp. Instead, he will only remove the hair follicles from a shaved section of head hair, then insert the follicles into puncture holes on the thinning section of the scalp.
