It's Time to Rediscover Confidence

Does race affect hair loss?

Does race affect hair loss?

In general, scientists differentiate between three different types of hair: Afro-Caribbean hair, Caucasian hair, and Asian hair. These hairs tend to vary in growth, texture, and maintainability because of their varying sizes of hair follicles. For instance, Afro-Carribean hair usually grows from an oval-shaped follicle, while Asian hair typically grows from a round one.

The difference in the shape of their hair follicles, in addition to other genetic factors, leads to different rates of hair growth between races. For example, Caucasian hair, on average, grows at a rate of about 1.2 centimeters per month; those with Caucasian hair also generally have more individual strands. In comparison, Afro-Carribean hair grows at a rate of only about 0.2-0.9 centimeters per month, making it the slowest of all three hair types.

Though we have confirmed that there is a difference in growth between the different hair types, there is still debate about whether or not hair loss is affected by race. Some scientists believe that a change in hair loss results from genetic differences associated with different races, while others do not find any correlation. However, both sides confirm that Caucasian hair does tend to be the most susceptible to conditions like male pattern baldness and alopecia. In fact, males with Caucasian hair make up nearly 50 to 80 percent of all cases of these hair loss conditions.

However, it’s important to note that race is not the only cause of hair loss and that it can affect any individual at any time. At Hairline Ink, we recognize this risk and therefore have perfected our treatment to aid people with their hair loss needs. Our treatment, scalp micropigmentation, can give you the look of real, 3D hair follicles in as little as two to three treatments and is also fully customizable, meaning that you can get the perfect color hair that’s right for you.
