Western society upholds long, voluminous hair as the standard of beauty for women, but not everyone plays by the rules. From TV to the movies, we are blessed with some truly badass fictional bald women, who can inspire any of us to brave the shave.
The Dora Milaje
In 2018, the much-anticipated feature film Black Panther was released. Among the most iconic characters in the film were the female warriors that make up the Dora Milaje, which translates to “adorned ones.” These warriors are exclusively women, tasked with protecting the king of Wakanda. Only the most elite female warriors are granted access to this group. In addition to being fierce, strong, and driven, each member of the Dora Milaje is completely bald.
Imperator Furiosa
Brought into the larger cultural limelight with the 2015 release of Mad Max: Fury Road, the beloved character Imperator Furiosa is a rugged, determined woman, journeying to her homeland in hopes of saving herself and others. Leading the charge against a tyrant, throughout her journey she demonstrates strength, adaptability, and resourcefulness as she rages against the system.
Ellen Ripley
In Alien 3, every (human) character is bald, but most notable is our hero, the badass Ellen Ripley. In order to blend in with the bald male prisoners in the penal colony, Ripley shaves her head. She then leads these men in a rebellion, proving that losing her hair did not cause her to lose her confidence. Sigourney Weaver, who played Ripley in all three Alien films, made waves when she chose to actually shave her head, rather than wear a bald cap, for this role.
Eleven
An instant pop culture sensation, Stranger Things introduced the world to Eleven, a young bald girl with extraordinary abilities and a penchant for Eggo waffles. Though she does grow her hair out by Season 2 and don a wig in a delightful E.T. reference, her most iconic look is certainly her shaved head.
