Finasteride and Dutasteride are the most popular hair loss treatment drugs available today. Both products prevent testosterone’s conversion to dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone is an androgen responsible for male pattern baldness. Although the two drugs share the same benefits, they have different effects and purposes.
Finasteride is FDA Approved
Finasteride is the only drug of the two approved by the FDA as a treatment for male pattern baldness. Dutasteride is only approved by the FDA as treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Dutasteride can prevent hair loss, but it is only prescribed for hair loss as an off-label treatment.
Dutasteride Blocks More DHT Than Finasteride
Research indicates that Dutasteride more effectively blocks DHT production than finasteride. In a study, Dutasteride (5mg) stopped over 95% of DHT in 400 patients. Finasteride’s DHT blocking results varied more than those of Dutasteride. In some patients, finasteride reduced DHT by 90% and in others by 50%. The average DHT reduction was 70%.
Both Have Rare, Tolerable Side Effects
Finasteride has been around longer than Dutasteride. As a result, more research exists on finasteride’s effects. In studies, 1% of men on finasteride reported decreased libido. Dutasteride is newer on the market. Few studies have explored Dutasteride’s effects. Current studies deem Dutasteride safe and well-tolerated.
Which is Better For Me?
Choosing between these two drugs depends on your tolerance for risk. Dutasteride has shown to prevent hair loss more effectively than finasteride. However, finasteride has been on the market much longer, and there is a greater level of certainty regarding the drug’s effects. Although both of these drugs are options for hair loss prevention, neither are a perfect or permanent solution to hair loss.
