Finasteride and dutasteride are two of the most popular hair loss treatment drugs available on the market today. Both of these products work by stopping the body from converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone is an androgen responsible for male pattern baldness. Although the two drugs share the same benefits, they have different effects and purposes for use.
Finasteride is FDA Approved
Finasteride is the only drug of the two approved by the FDA as a treatment for male pattern baldness. Dutasteride is only approved by the FDA as treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Dutasteride can prevent hair loss, but it is only prescribed for hair loss as an off-label treatment.
Dutasteride Blocks More DHT Than Finasteride
Studies have shown that dutasteride blocks the production of DHT in the body more effectively than finasteride. One study looked at approximately 400 patients and found that dutasteride blocked more than 95% of DHT production when taken in 5mg doses. The results for blocking DHT with finasteride varied much more than with dutasteride. Some patients saw a 90% reduction of DHT production while others saw a 50% reduction. The average DHT reduction was 70%.
Both Have Rare, Tolerable Side Effects
Finasteride has been on the market much longer than dutasteride. Because of this, there has been extensive study and research on the drug’s effects. Studies have found that 1% of men experience a drop in libido and sexual performance while taking the drug. These side effects are reversible after drug use ends. Dutasteride is much more new to the market in comparison. There have not been extensive studies regarding the drug’s effects. Studies done on the drug so far report the drug as safe and well-tolerated.
Which is Better For Me?
Choosing between these two drugs depends on your tolerance for risk. Dutasteride has shown to prevent hair loss more effectively than finasteride. However, finasteride has been on the market much longer, and there is a greater level of certainty regarding the drug’s effects. Although both of these drugs are options for hair loss prevention, neither are a perfect or permanent solution to hair loss.
