It's Time to Rediscover Confidence

Genetic vs. Reactive Hair Loss

Genetic vs. Reactive Hair Loss

Two primary types of hair loss are responsible for the daily frustrations that so many people face, each of which has many subcategories. Genetic hair loss occurs, quite simply, because of a person’s DNA. Male pattern baldness is the most obvious type of genetic hair loss.

Reactive hair loss, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated. It occurs when an outside factor triggers hair to fall out or inhibits its regrowth. Certain medications, for example, can cause hair thinning or hair loss.

What is hair made from?

Hair is literally made of dead cells in our bodies. Keratin, which is a protein our bodies produce in follicles, create countless cells. When those cells die, as new cells are created, the dead cells grow out into what we know as our hair.

Genetic Hair Loss

Our genetic make-up helps determine everything from our eye color and height to whether we have naturally curly hair or are right- or left-handed. Our genes also factor into whether we will eventually lose our hair. Hormones and genetic makeup play a role in the following, and each causes progressive hair thinning.

  • Male Pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia)
  • Female Pattern Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia)

Fighting to reverse genetic hair loss can be especially difficult.

Reactive Hair Loss

Reactive hair loss is just what it sounds like. Your hair reacts to some type of change. It is caused when something interrupts our ability to regrow hair, or causes it to fall out. A trigger occurs, like receiving chemotherapy treatments, which can cause immediate disruption in hair growth. Many factors contribute to reactive hair loss, including:

  • Medical conditions and diseases
  • Certain medications
  • Nutritional deficiency (Vitamin B12, for example)
  • Significant weight change
  • Cancer treatments
  • Constrictive hairstyles
  • Stress

Though some reactive hair loss can be reversed by stopping the behavior that led to the hair loss, sometimes reversing reactive hair loss can be difficult, or even impossible.
