There is a cyclical pattern of hair growth and loss in everyone. At any given time, the vast majority of hair follicles are in an active growth stage. At the same given time, a small percentage (around 10%) are in a resting stage where, at the end, the follicle will release the hair. It’s speculated that we naturally lose around 50 to 150 strands of hair a day! This is all completely normal, even for those with no major hair loss. However, Swedish scientists conducted a study on 800 women over the course of six years and found that more hair fell out each autumn than any other month. They speculate that this is evolutionary—if the resting follicles were to release those hairs in the summer, then our heads would be exposed to the sun, leading to harmful and painful sunburn. Basically, your hair follicles are doing nothing more than playing catch-up in the fall, resulting in twice the amount of hair loss.
As we’re approaching these fall months, remember that stressing out about the situation will only make it worse. Instead, keep in mind that the phenomenon is completely natural and often unavoidable, but you can keep the remaining hair on your head happy by following hair-care routines that emphasize hydration. Make sure you’re drinking lots of water and avoiding unnecessary brushing sessions or heat (like with flat irons and hair dryers), especially because your heaters will soon be blowing and drying out the area even more. Make sure you’re getting plenty of vitamins!
If you’re really concerned about your rate of hair loss, spread your fingers and put your hand through your hair, near the skin. Close your fingers and pull your hand outward from your scalp to the tips of your hair. Keep a hold on any strands that you pull out. Repeat this process all over the head and count the strands. You can expect 10 strands during a normal season and 10-20 during the autumn. If it’s more than that, seek guidance.
