Unless you received Scalp Micropigmentation to add density to long hair, it’s likely that you should be shaving to keep the look authentic. There are many thoughts and ideas on what should be done when, but there are several personal factors you should consider: the sensitivity of your head, and the look you’re trying to achieve.
To start off, our expert SMP artists are going to recommend that you wait four days to a week after treatment before you first shave, and then maintain whatever schedule pleases you best. For people with male pattern baldness or large expanses of bald areas, that schedule is usually tight; if your natural hair gets too long, the look will begin to look fake. For many with patchy or small bald spots, they find that a little bit of growth can help to create an illusion of depth.
There are several different methods you could employ for maintaining that shaved look:
- Clippers (with no guard)
- Electric Razors (meant for the face)
- Wet Shaving (with a razor)
Clippers are often regarded as a beginner’s method, as many people have already used them or the idea of using a razor on the first go is simply uncomfortable. Some people, again those with patchy or small bald spots, often like this method long-term because the tiny amount of growth makes the entire scalp look more 3-D.
Electric razors are a common long-term shaving solution for many, due to their portability and lack of mess. They’re an easy, grab-and-go option with few downsides. However, the downsides that do exist are often a dealbreaker. Due to the nature of an electric razor, you’ll probably need several passes to get the job done. Not only is this time-consuming, but it can also irritate your scalp, which you should’ve been told to avoid doing.
Wet shaving is the final option. When done in the shower, with shaving cream or gel, this process can be quick, clean, and even soothing on your scalp. When you feel comfortable enough moving to this option, it’s often considered the best.
