The Primary Causes of Telogen Effluvium

Telogen effluvium is a form of hair loss caused by a reduction in the number of follicles growing hair. It’s different from male or female pattern baldness, as it rarely causes a receding hairline and instead causes the hair to thin. Telogen effluvium is the second most common form of hair loss, but fortunately, it isn’t often permanent. If you’re experiencing this condition, you should educate yourself to know how to best combat it.

Telogen effluvium can be caused by physical trauma, such as a car wreck, substantial blood loss, or exposure to toxins. The sudden shock of these incidents causes the body to focus all attention on the affected areas, sending hair follicles into hibernation. In these situations, the thinning of the hair is usually noticeable for a month or two after the accident and will go away on its own with time, as long as you’re maintaining good health.

Telogen effluvium can also be caused by a rapid hormone shift. This works in the same way as physical trauma, sending the follicles into a hibernation stage. The most common cause of rapid hormone shifts is pregnancy in women. It often shows up during pregnancy but is restored six to twelve months after the birth of the child.

Certain medications such as antidepressants can also interfere with the body’s hormone levels and cause thinning hair. If you experience hair loss after starting a new medication, talk to your doctor about alternatives to your current regimen.

It’s also speculated that telogen effluvium may be caused by deficiencies in the diet. Researchers believe that a diet devoid of iron, zinc, vitamin B-6, or vitamin B-12 may result in thinning hair. It’s often not enough to solely take vitamins to cover these deficiencies, and it’s a good idea to talk with a dietician about including these nutrients in your everyday diet.

If you’re unable to find a solution to your telogen effluvium issues, a scalp micropigmentation procedure may be able to help. The specialists at Hairline Ink will be able to pigment your scalp in a way that ultimately conceals your thinning hair.
