It's Time to Rediscover Confidence

The Recordable Link Between Income, Poverty, and Hair Loss

Hair Loss Causes

Being poor can make life a daily struggle. Those living in poverty feel the effects of poor nutrition, a lower life expectancy, and it’s been shown that poverty can aggravate hair loss.

Above all else, hair loss is a genetic condition. It can affect anyone, rich or poor. Living in poverty is not the cause of male-pattern baldness. However, there are some proven links between behaviors linked to poverty which also accelerate hair loss. Also, the stress associated with poverty make hair loss more likely, even if unhealthy lifestyle choices are avoided.

For example, smoking is much more common in low-income communities. Cigarette companies target these neighborhoods in their advertising since they have a much higher likelihood of smoking. Cigarette smoking has also been shown to accelerate hair loss, caused by the many toxins they possess.

Those living in poverty are also more likely to suffer from improper nutrition, which can have an adverse effect on hair. Many impoverished people reside in food deserts, where there isn’t a readily available supply of healthy food. Poor nutrition means that the body isn’t getting everything that it needs for optimal functioning. This can lead to a myriad of health problems, such as obesity and heart failure. Hair loss is just one side effect of poor nutrition, accelerated by the body’s inability to provide the hormones that fuel hair growth.

Stress is also a significant factor in hair loss, and poverty is a stressor for millions of people. While stress is by no means exclusive to debt (it can be caused by job stress, family issues or many other factors) the two are undeniably intertwined. Poverty can cause anxiety in many ways. An impoverished person could be worried about how they’re going to get their next meal, provide for their family, or how they’re going to afford repairs to a home or automobile. The poor are constantly confronted with these kinds of stressors, putting them at high risk of accelerated hair loss.
