It's Time to Rediscover Confidence

What vitamin or mineral deficiencies cause hair loss?

vitamin or mineral deficiencies cause hair loss

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are two of the most common causes of hair loss and hair thinning – and yet, no one seems to know much about them. If you notice your hair falling out more than usual, make sure to check your vitamin intake.

Below are some vitamin deficiencies that are proven to result in hair loss:

  • Zinc deficiency – Zinc is best known for supporting cell function and helping the body to synthesize proteins. If your body does not have enough zinc, you are at risk for telogen effluvium (a temporary but intense hair loss condition). The people most at risk for a zinc deficiency are heavy drinkers, pregnant or lactating women, vegetarians, and/or people who suffer from a digestive disorder.
  • Antioxidant deficiency – The average adult needs about 15 milligrams of Vitamin E and 75 to 90 milligrams of Vitamin C daily. Low amounts of either can cause moderate to severe hair loss/shedding.
  • Biotin deficiency – Though rare, biotin deficiencies can cause hair loss and hair thinning. Vitamin B is linked to keratin production, an essential protein in hair production. If you are not consuming at least 30 micrograms of biotin a day, you may want to consider biotin supplements to prevent hair loss.
  • Vitamin D deficiency – Vitamin D helps hair follicles grow, making it essential for hair production. In fact, people who suffer from alopecia are often known to have a Vitamin D deficiency. If your body is not supplied enough of this vitamin, you may begin to lose your hair.

It’s important that if you think you suffer from any of the above deficiencies, you should contact a doctor as soon as possible to prevent other health concerns.

These deficiencies can’t always be cured with a vitamin or a change in eating habits – sometimes, there is no way to prevent hair loss.
