It's Time to Rediscover Confidence

What’s the Link Between the Thyroid and Hair Loss?

Thyroid and Hair Loss

The thyroid is an important part of the endocrine system, located in the front of the lower neck just below the Adam’s apple. The gland is shaped like a butterfly, and it releases hormones that regulate bodily functions, like protein synthesis and metabolic rates. However, when this gland does not function properly, it causes a myriad of problems ranging from weight issues to hair loss.

Hormones in the Body

The hair cycle has three different phases, and each hair follicle enters these stages independently. This process is primarily regulated by hormones released from the thyroid, and it explains why some daily hair loss is normal. Each follicle will either be in a growing, resting, or shedding phase. When thyroid activity increases dramatically or stops altogether, it disrupts the normal cycle that each hair follicle goes through. The hormone signal becomes imbalanced, and the hair follicles respond by entering a resting phase, preventing them from continuing to grow. Once the hair follicles stop growing, it is only a matter of time before they enter the third phase of the cycle and fall out. Many people don’t realize they have a thyroid problem right away, and this sometimes leads to significant hair loss before the thyroid is regulated through medical treatments.

Signs of Thyroid Disease

If you or someone you know is experiencing thyroid-related hair loss, the good news is that the hair follicles usually begin to grow as the hormone levels stabilize again. The thyroid plays an important role in maintaining good health, so you should see a doctor if you suspect a thyroid imbalance. Common symptoms of irregular thyroid activity include:

  • Abrupt changes in mood, including increased anxiety or moodiness
  • Strong intolerance for extreme temperature differences
  • Constant fatigue, sleepiness, or insomnia
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Muscle pain
  • Dry and itchy skin on the scalp
