Ayurveda Treatments for Hair Loss

Ayurveda Treatments for Hair Loss

Originating from India and considered by many to be one of the oldest healing sciences, Ayurveda is a natural form of healing and prevention achieved through an individual’s balance between thinking, diet, lifestyle, and use of herbs. By practicing “The Science of Life,” and making fundamental lifestyle changes, one can create a balance between the mind, body, and consciousness to treat unwanted illnesses and conditions. This includes hair loss.

For women and men experiencing hair loss, Ayurvedic remedies have become an increasingly popular form of treatment. According to Ayurvedic practice and research, one’s hair type correlates with body type and is broken down into three categories: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Reasons and remedies for hair loss depend on which group you belong to. Ayurvedic principles state that hair loss occurs because of Pitta Dosha, or unbalanced metabolism and digestion. Anything from poor diet to stress and anxiety can lead to Pitta Dosha, and therefore, hair loss.

Pitta Dosha can occur due to indulging in too much of the following:

– Tea and coffee
– Alcohol
– Meat
– Fried foods
– Overly spicy foods

Along with a poor diet, Pitta Dosha and hair loss in both men and women happens because of poor sleep, stress, dandruff, intoxicating foods and drink, and diseases like lupus. Through Ayurvedic treatment, one can stop hair fall and also regrow hair. Along with a healthy diet, exercise, and plenty of sleep, common Ayurveda treatments include:

Bhringraj – Called the “King of Herbs,” it can be found in leaf or powder form and has been known to regrow hair and stop balding. Create a paste with ground leaves or powder and water and apply to the scalp for 20 minutes three times a week.

Amla – Indian gooseberries not only treats hair loss but also improves digestion. Combine amla powder with water to form a paste and apply to the scalp for 30 minutes before rinsing.

Aloe Vera – A commonly found plant, combine ⅓ cup of aloe vera gel with three tablespoons of coconut oil and two tablespoons of honey to form a paste and apply to the scalp for 30 minutes twice a week.
