It's Time to Rediscover Confidence

Does Gabapentin Cause Hair Loss?

Gabapentin is a commonly prescribed medication for a variety of conditions, including restless leg syndrome, hot flashes, and other seizure disorders, for which it acts as an anticonvulsant. While this drug undoubtedly provides benefits for millions of people, it does come with some side effects. Given that gabapentin is one of the most-prescribed medications in the United States, alopecia (drug-induced hair loss) associated with the drug would likely come up in some cases.

The evidence supporting the existence of alopecia is generally supportive that gabapentin leads to alopecia, though there isn’t yet a sufficient body of evidence to prove definitively that there is a link between gabapentin and hair loss in patients. A 2011 study by a respected medical journal as well as a 2015 study that encompassed other antiepileptic and anticonvulsive medications provided strong evidence linking this class of medications with alopecia, though importantly the later study did not include gabapentin. So, while there is evidence that patients taking these medications experienced alopecia, the body of evidence is not yet substantial enough to make a definitive conclusion.

Even with favorable but not outright evidence, your individual experience as a patient may have led to developing alopecia. Especially if you are planning to take the drug for an extended period of time, you may continue to experience hair loss or an increase in the severity of the hair loss. The good news is that there are lasting solutions that do not rely on the use of harsh chemicals or even more medication to achieve a fuller-looking head of hair.

For those facing alopecia due to a medication, scalp micropigmentation can be an excellent option to achieve a fuller-looking head of hair, or in bald patients, a clean-shaven look that will last far longer than most other treatments. By injecting small amounts of pigment into the scalp, skin micropigmentation is a cosmetic procedure with few side effects following treatment, accomplished within 2-3 treatment sessions.
