Most men will experience thinning or loss of hair in their lifetime. Most men attribute 90% of their hair loss to male pattern baldness, often seen as a natural aging process.
But why does your body forsake you in such a way? What’s actually going on?
Your genes largely dictate if, when, and how quickly you’ll lose hair. To complicate matters, A blend of genes from both your mother and father determines hair loss, not just one gene.
There are still many determining factors related to male pattern baldness that have yet to be identified.
We know that a critical gene controls the presence of androgen receptors and determines your hair’s fate. Keep that in mind for this next section.
This is how it works:
- If you suffer from male pattern baldness, your scalp hair is vulnerable to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The more receptors you have, the more likely your hair is at risk. Interestingly, the hair on the side of the head is not particularly vulnerable to DHT, which is why you often see the characteristic “horseshoe” pattern of late-stage baldness.
- Over time, DHT binds to hair strands over time, shrinks them, and stops follicle production. As such, you’ll likely notice your hair thinning before you experience hair loss.
More men notice balding as they age because DHT takes time to damage the follicles. When this process begins and how long it takes varies from person to person.
On average, progressing to the last stages of baldness takes 15-25 years after you first notice thinning. About 20% of men will experience hair loss in their twenties, with that rate increasing to nearly half of all men in their fifties, 70% in their seventies, and so on.
