It's Time to Rediscover Confidence

Does Proscar actually work? Is it better than Propecia?

Propecia, a popular hair loss drug, contains the active ingredient Finasteride. This ingredient works by keeping testosterone from converting into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a large component to most instances of hair loss. Men with male pattern baldness often use Propecia, which is the brand name of the drug and produced by Merck, and it has about 1mg of Finasteride. Proscar is another drug produced by Merck, containing the exact same active ingredient.

The key difference between the two types of drugs is the amount of Finasteride they contain; Propecia has 1mg of the active drug, while Proscar has 5mg. When one of their many similarities is price, many people are wondering if it’s more efficient to just go with Proscar as their drug of choice. This would be a bad idea for several reasons.

It’s no more effective

There is currently no evidence that supports the idea that a higher dosage of the drug is better at preventing hair loss. You’re likely to receive the same hair loss results from both drugs.

There’s no way to regulate the dose

The next logical question is whether it’s worth it to purchase Proscar and simply split the tablet into two to five pieces. This is bound to be more cost-effective, but there’s no way to guarantee that you’d be getting the correct dosage.

The two different dosages are meant for very different problems

This is perhaps the most important reason you should continue paying for the Propecia. Propecia is meant explicitly for men battling male pattern baldness and other types of hair loss. Proscar is intended to prevent the onset of prostate cancer by treating enlarged prostates first, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia later, and prostate cancer in the most serious of situations. It’s important to note that Proscar is an extremely serious drug that is meant to help men facing prostate cancer while Propecia is simply a cosmetic solution.

If Propecia is no longer helping you, or you’re looking for more cosmetic choices, consider the benefits of Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP). The hyperrealistic results come with few if any, side effects and the illusion is nearly permanent. Have questions about hair loss? Hairline Ink has the answers.
